FDNY says the fire began inside the ductwork of the Las Margaritas Pizzeria on Villa Ave just after 5 p.m. Friday.
Residents in the apartments above the shop speaking to News 12 about the massive smoke damage.
“It was bad, we came out we were coughing. When he opened the door a bunch of smoke came in you could smell it," said Giselle, a resident on the third floor.
The Red Cross says it is currently helping 12 people with temporary housing.
