5h agoThere was a swift response from the FDNY and other emergency agencies after a chaotic scene Saturday night when a large sailboat collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.
Radio calls from FDNY dispatchers captured the urgency and confusion in the early moments following the crash, as crews worked quickly to understand the scope of the emergency.
Officials say the vessel, now confirmed to be a Mexican navy sailing ship, was attempting to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge when it struck part of the structure.
The mast was severely damaged, and the ship continued to drift in the East River toward the Manhattan Bridge—with nearly 300 people still aboard.
As the damaged vessel continued to float, a tugboat arrived to transfer passengers to safety at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Mexican officials say they are working closely with New York City officials in the ongoing investigation.
