She’s held the position for 3 1/2 years, but Vanessa L. Gibson says her work as Bronx borough president is far from over and that the work she’s done is proof of her commitment to the community.
With a focus on economic advancement, housing stability, youth violence and job security, Gibson says her goal if reelected is to continue uplifting the borough.
“I've invested over $50 million in education in three years, over $100 million across the borough. We need to have social mobility, and we need to create more pathways to the middle class,” Gibson said while meeting voters at a busy transit hub in Hunts Point. “I'm proud of our investments, but we have to keep going. The momentum is there.”
The current borough president previously served in the New York State Assembly, as well as the New York City Council. In her years of experience, she says creating job and housing opportunities is what makes a community thrive, which is why she’s hosted job fairs at Borough Hall and supported the creation of affordable housing, like the
newly renovated YP Senior Residence in Morris Heights.
In the aftermath of multiple shootings involving young people both as perpetrators and victims, Gibson says one of her priorities will be youth initiatives. She’s previously partnered with the NYPD to get guns off the streets and install cameras, which she calls an important tool in addressing crime, as well as with the anti-gun violence organizations.
“That's the answer to the gun violence we're experiencing: offer young people something so that they can show us their skills, their experiences, their interest, their dreams, and let us fulfill those dreams.”
Gibson says what sets her apart from her competition is her message of hope.
“It's hard to get a lot of that done in a real transformative way in four years,” Gibson said. “So running for reelection is about continuing on what we've accomplished together. It's about recognizing that every Bronx family should not just get by, but they need to get ahead.”
Early voting starts is June 14, and primary election day is June 24.
